[Tap. Tap. Tap.

Zelda's fingers drum softly against a wooden desk in the library.
]

It has come to my attention that a certain holiday season is upon us. I have...done a bit of reading up on the subject, and according to the texts...this 'Santa' quite a few of you have referred to is a but of a misunderstood character. From what I can tell, he appears to have manifested from an early 'Christian' saint that went by the name of Nicholas who was a bishop. He earned himself a reputation for gift giving which evolved and was manipulated by those of the faith.

The question I pose is this; is this particular legend itself commonplace amongst your people? Or...is it simply the belief of...this large man in red who breaks into your homes to deliver gifts to children?

If you think that's funny, read up on the Tooth Fairy.

Are all of the stories as...interesting as this 'Santa'?

[Tooth fairy, tooth fairy...she's flipping through pages to look it up.]

What an...odd...tradition.

All myths are interesting.

It is, is it not? I admit I am a bit...confused. There are many varying stories of this...one single man and yet what he has evolved into with elves and toys...

Strange.

...Yes, I see that. What in the world would a fairy want with children's teeth?

I've heard people talking about "Santa" before. But I still find it odd.

In your world, or here?

Here. There are no traditions like this where I am from.

Nor I. We have a winter festival, though nothing of this caliber. I would personally rather think it...alarming for a man to break into a household.

In the case of the Tooth Fairy myth, it's largely the result of the idealization of childhood that began in the Victorian era.

...Which doesn't mean a thing to you, I suspect.

Not...yet. [Still thumbing through pages.] Though this text states that it was a period of time during the reign of a queen of the same name.

As though we would think evolution over time is impossible. You and I are exceptions, Your Majesty. It is a bit unfortunate that such a thing that was once so pure has depreciated over time to attachment to materialistic things, but not even we are excluded from such.

Either way, I think the stories are fascinating.

We do too. I would think anyone forcing his way into a home would be arrested.

It is a bit unfortunate, but I admit it is rather interesting to see how this story evolved into something so different.

Have you ever heard of the tooth fairy, Princess?

I would think so as well, but I suppose it is only a legend.

...At least, that is what these books state, at any rate. Most claim this 'Santa' is created by the parents of children.

Right. A great many cultural practices began during her reign and solidified in the following century as mass communication developed and allowed a common culture across vast areas.

Which part? The original legend, or the fact that a very large man is sneaking down ones chimney?

So...they lie?

[As if the idea is so novel to Odette. Her father has resorted to trickery to get her and Derek to spend time together.]

I would imagine like most things, that time simply caused people and ideas to change. It amazes me that in spite of the time that passes us both, we are still nearly mirrors of one another.

[Zelda thinks for a moment.]

No. I cannot say I have. What may that be?

[There's a thump as Zelda puts the book away, and begins searching for another.]

I think I should like to learn more about this queen...it seems as though it would be beneficial, somehow.

It seems that way. I haven't quite finished reading up on the reasoning behind it.

Very true. [There is a shuffling as pages turn.]

Evidently, it is a fairy that gives children gifts, usually money, in exchange for the teeth they shed while young.

Fascinating.

There doesn't seem to be any at all. Why would a parent lie to a child about a man breaking into their home? Wouldn't that frighten them?
