Zelda was the young Ruler of Hyrule until its invasion by the Twilight King Zant to whom she surrendered to in order to prevent the deaths of herself and her people. Zelda's sacrifice spared the lives of the patrons of Hyrule, but it did not prevent them from a suffering even she could not have imagined. As the Twilight the people were turned into lost spirits; losing their physical bodies. They are, for the most part, unaware of the events, but they can see the shadow creatures and other actions performed by them.

Not all beings were turned into spirits, however. Many were turned into "shadow creatures" (Twilight Monsters) due to the Twilight; they became mere shadows of their former selves with no hint of personality.

Zelda is unaffected by the Twilight (many speculate it is because of the Triforce she bears), and meets Link during his earliest transformation into a wolf. Later, she transfers her power (or, as many people speculate) the Triforce itself to aid the dying Midna, and loses her physical being in the process.

She does regain her body, and is later posessed by Ganondorf and is forced to fight against Link in the beginning stages of the final battle.

Shadow and Light are two sides of the same coin...One cannot exist without the other.
