I suppose you are correct - there is little we can do to change the circumstances that you speak of. [Because the Captain is insufferable, and completely mad.]

That'd seem to be the case, although before this particular moment, I haven't wanted to admit it. I think this ship jades the people who are on it after a time. I'm not immune to this, but I wish I was.

As in, even those with the greatest optimism are probably taken down a little with the influence of the ship and its other passengers. I was very hopeful when I first arrived on board. I wouldn't say I'm not hopeful now, I'm just not as determined as I once was.
